Can Dogs Eat Strawberries?

Strawberries are not only delicious, but they are also good for our health. Strawberries are often praised for the high level of vitamin C they contain. They also are a good source of fiber and are on the list of cancer-fighting foods. But are strawberries good for dogs too? Can dogs eat strawberries?

The short answer would be yes, dogs can eat strawberries.

Dogs Can Eat Strawberries But Not Too Many

While dogs can eat strawberries and benefit from their nutritional value, eating an excessive amount of strawberries at once can upset their stomachs and lead to diarrhea. This is why it’s important to moderate the quantity of strawberries you give to your dog.

A good idea would be to feed your dog 1-4 strawberries as treats for learning a new trick or command.

A Dog Should Not Have Access to a Strawberry Garden

can-dogs-eat-strawberries-1If you grow strawberries in your home garden, it’s important to make sure that your dog does not have access to the strawberry garden. If your dog can easily get into your strawberry patch, it will be hard to know just how much he has eaten.  Also, if you use pesticides on your berries, your dog could ingest those toxins and become very ill.

Wash the Strawberries First

Wherever you get your strawberries, be sure to wash them so that if pesticides were used, those toxins won’t reach your dog. Do not bath them for long, though, as strawberries will simply soak up the water. A quick rinse in cool water will do.

Strawberries Are Good for Your Dog’s Teeth

One of the reasons why strawberries would make a perfect treat for your dog is that they contain an enzyme that can help keep your dog’s teeth clean. In addition, strawberries are rich in fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants that, in moderation, are all beneficial for your dog’s health.

So while dogs can eat strawberries, it’s important not to feed your dog too many strawberries at once, and make sure the strawberries you give to your dog have been washed or better yet, have never been exposed to pesticides.
