Can Dogs Eat Pretzels?

If you like to have pretzels every now and then, you might think about sharing them with your canine friend, but are pretzels safe for dogs? Can dogs eat pretzels? Unfortunately for our four-legged best friends, the answer is no, dogs cannot eat pretzels.

The problem with pretzels for dogs is that pretzels are covered with salt, which can be dangerous for dogs.

If your dog already had a pretzel, don’t panic as a single pretzel is not likely to contain enough salt to harm your dog’s health. It is, though, very important not to give your dog any more pretzels as eating a good amount of pretzels or other salty foods can results in salt poisoning in dogs.

A traditional knot-like pretzel covered with salt is not something a dog can eat — the excessive salt makes it dangerous for dogs.

Salt poisoning is a very serious condition that can even lead to the death of your beloved four-legged companion.

If you suspect that your dog has had too much salty food, watch out for the following signs: vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, lethargy, walking drunk, excessive thirst or urination, seizures and coma.

If your dog shows any of the above signs, contact your veterinarian or the Pet Poison Helpline as soon as possible because your dog might have salt poisoning.

What About Sweet Pretzels? Can Dogs Eat Sweet Pretzels?

Some sweet pretzels can be just as dangerous for dogs as salty pretzels. E.g. pretzels with raisins are a definite no-no for all dogs as raisins are toxic to dogs.

Before giving a sweet pretzel to your dog, make sure it doesn’t contain anything that is toxic to dogs.

It would be a good idea not to give your dog pretzels at all because even if a pretzel doesn’t contain anything harmful for your dog, it still won’t provide your dog any valuable nutrients.
