There’s no doubt that okra is good for us. It’s a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, Calcium, Magnesium and many other important nutrients. It also contains anti-cancer properties. On top of all that, it tastes really good. Naturally, you want to share okra with your dog. So the question is: can dogs eat okra?

Yes, in moderate amounts, it is okay for dogs to eat okra. As I already mentioned, okra is a nutritional powerhouse, and that’s why it wouldn’t only be okay for dogs to have some okra, but it would actually benefit their health.

Although, okra is great for dogs, don’t feed your dog a large amount of okra at once. Just like other vegetables and fruits, eating a large quantity of okra can cause excessive gas and diarrhea in dogs. To be on the safe side, make sure that okra or other vegetables would not make up more than 10-15 percent of your dog’s daily diet.

A healthier way to prepare okras for your dog would be to cook them in water. That is not only a clever way to prepare okra without adding fat, but it will also make the nutrients more absorbable.

If you do not feel like cooking, you can simply treat your dog with a few raw okra pods.


Dogs can eat okra, but eating a large amount can still cause digestive problems. Because frying would add fat to okra pods, it is not recommended to give your dog fried okras. Raw, steamed or cooked okras, though, are fine for your four-legged best friend.
