Can Dogs Eat Cheerios?

If you like to start your mornings with a bowl of Cheerios, your dog might ask for some as well, but can dogs eat Cheerios? Well, there’s no one answer to this question. For one, Cheerios contain wheat and grain, which are really good for the average healthy dog, however, if your dog is allergic to wheat or grain, then they are far from good for your dog.

Also, there’s quite a selection of different tastes in the Cheerios line, and the sugar content and other ingredients differ between different types of Cheerios.

So Dogs Cannot Eat Cheerios?

No, I wouldn’t say that dogs cannot eat cheerios. While there are some types of cheerios that aren’t safe for dogs to eat, most of them aren’t harmful for dogs.

No Chocolate Cheerios for Your Doggy!

Please note that the picture is illustrative, and it’s not a good idea to give your dog Cheerios with milk.

Dogs should not be given Chocolate Cheerios as dogs cannot eat chocolate.  As even the consumption of chocolate in small amounts can cause many health problems in dogs, it’s best to avoid giving your dog chocolate or anything containing chocolate.

No Cheerios with Milk Either!

As most dogs are lactose intolerant, it’s best to avoid giving your canine friend Cheerios with milk.

Contact a Veterinarian

As grain allergy in dogs is far from rare, it’s best to contact a veterinarian and make sure that your dog is not allergic to wheat or grain before giving her Cheerios.

Don’t Let Your Dog Fill Up on Cheerios

For one, Cheerios contain quite a lot of sugar, and it’s not good for dogs to eat a lot of sugary food. For two, in order to remain healthy, dogs needs to get quite a lot of protein from their diet, unfortunately, Cheerios cannot provide dogs with protein.

Use Cheerios as Dog Treats

I wouldn’t recommend to let your dog eat a lot of Cheerios at once, however, using Cheerios as treats to reward your dog for learning a new trick or performing an old one, is a good idea  — Cheerios do contain a lot of vitamins and minerals that are good for your canine friend.

In conclusion, while dogs can eat most types of Cheerios, you shouldn’t let your dog eat a lot of Cheerios at once, and never give her Chocolate Cheerios.
